“You can never go against a club. You are never going to win.

“You can try as hard as you want, but the club has the longest breath. As a player, you have to make the right decision. You don’t want to kill your career because of the situation he is in now.

“Both of them [Costa and Conte] don’t want to work together. Now it comes down to Chelsea saying, ‘Costa, come here, let’s talk about the situation and make sure you can go’.

“He wants to hold out and say, ‘I don’t even want to come back, I want you guys to close out a deal so I don’t come back to the Bridge’, but it doesn’t work like that. No player can do that. No player has the right to do that.”

Ray Wilkins believes Chelsea could take Diego Costa to court

Stan Collymore was less sympathetic with Chelsea and the 28-year-old striker, blasting the club should have expected their relationship to end badly when signing the player.

He told the Mirror: “Chelsea can’t have any complaints with Diego Costa because they knew what they were getting when they signed him.

“Here’s a player who chose to be Spanish for the sake of a European passport and the sort of person – like Floyd Mayweather Junior and Conor McGregor – who doesn’t give a damn about the damage he does to his sport as long as he gets paid.

“They need to get rid as soon as possible because he’s absolute poison.

“People say, ‘We’ll miss him’, but no, we won’t, I won’t.

“I won’t miss the shadiness, I won’t miss him skulking around after digging someone and I won’t miss him saying he has been treated like a criminal, which is utter tosh.

“Chelsea have danced with the devil and now they’re paying for it.”
