Paul Merson: Arsenal would let Alexis Sanchez join PSG tomorrow

PAUL MERSON believes Arsenal would allow Alexis Sanchez to join Paris Saint-Germain tomorrow if it prevented him joining Manchester City.

Sanchez has entered the final 12 months of his Arsenal contract and is no closer to agreeing on a new deal.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger insists the Chilean will not leave the Emirates before the end of the transfer window but interest in the 28-year-old refuses to go away.

A reunion with former Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola at Manchester City has been strongly mooted.

While PSG are understood to still hold an interest in Sanchez despite breaking the transfer record with the signing of Neymar for £200m.

And Merson reckons that although Arsenal’s public stance is Sanchez is not for sale, the club would actually let him go to France to avoid a repeat of losing a key player to a direct rival like Robin van Persie’s move to Manchester United in 2012.

"Arsenal would let Sanchez go to PSG tomorrow," Merson told Sky Sports.

"The biggest worry is Manchester City and that's the problem.

"If he went to City there would be uproar from the Arsenal fans. They would look at it and ask why the club are selling him to a Premier League rival.

"If he goes to PSG he's out of sight, out of mind. He's not going to come back and hurt you.

"However, it's the Man City situation that's the concern and we've seen it all before with Robin van Persie's move to Manchester United."
