MANCHESTER UNITED goalkeeper David de Gea will "definitely" join Real Madrid in the future, according to former Bernabeu hero Steve McManaman.

Man United score after De Gea saves Blind's horror back pass

De Gea has been heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid over a number of years and came close to signing for them in 2015.

He was once again wanted earlier in this transfer window but has, as yet, failed to materialise.

The Spain No 1 starred for Manchester United in their 2-1 European Super Cup loss to Real last night.

McManaman believes De Gea is a better goalkeeper than Real's Keylor Navas and it is only a matter of time before he joins them.

"I thought the goalkeeper played really well tonight for Manchester United, I thought de Gea did well," McManaman said on BT Sport.

"I don't know if that was a plus point or a minus point for United, because out of the two goalkeepers, he was the better goalkeeper by far.

"Madrid covet him highly don't they and they want him. They'll end up taking him off Man United, whether it's next year, the year after.

"They will take him in the end, definitely, they will definitely take him.

"In the end if United are not delivering the trophies that de Gea wants, he'll want to move to Real Madrid

"He's a Spanish boy and he'll end up going that way. I thought he did well, he shone out of the goalkeepers tonight."
