Neymar: Why did Manchester United not try to sign star? What are real reasons?

NEYMAR was on Manchester United’s radar and a transfer deal was on the cards.

Neymar is set to receive £515,000 per week with PSG

It didn’t go through - but why? Express Sport look at the reasons why a deal didn’t happen.

Why didn’t Manchester United sign Neymar?

Insiders at Old Trafford say the club felt this entire saga was a way for Neymar to get a bigger contract.

United were wary of getting played as they have in the past with Sergio Ramos, when he appeared to want a move before signing a new and improved deal with Real Madrid.

One agent told The Independent that many key figures in the game don’t trust Neymar’s “money-mad” entourage. They add that the star could have been backed into a corner that they don't really want to be in.

The lure of Paris was also a big factor in the deal.

Neymar has a number of international team-mates in the French club’s squad including his close pal Dani Alves.

He is also guaranteed to be the biggest name at the club while, at Manchester United, that mantle belongs to Paul Pogba.

Could Manchester United have afforded Neymar?

Jose Mourinho has seemed to publicly suggest that United are tightening their purse-strings.

They have signed three players but are still after a fourth, although it’s by no means guaranteed.

United’s general policy is not to activate release clauses, too, meaning they wouldn’t have stumped up the cash for the player.

Has the Neymar deal been done?

Neymar's legal representatives have paid Barcelona 222million euros (£200.6million) to release the Brazilian from his contract ahead of an expected record-breaking move to Paris St Germain.

The delegation was turned away by La Liga officials earlier today but Barcelona, who would only allow the 25-year-old striker to leave the club if his 222m euro release fee was met and paid in full, have accepted a payment "in the player's name with regards to the unilateral termination of the contract that united both parties."

A statement published on Barcelona's official website said the details of the transaction would now be passed to UEFA so that the governing body can "determine the disciplinary responsibilities that may arise from this case."
