Arsenal set to appoint new goalkeeping coach as one of several backroom changes

ARSENAL are reportedly set to bring in Andy Woodman as a new goalkeeping coach.

According to the Mirror, Ex-Crystal Palace and Newcastle coach Woodman will look after the club’s under-23’s as part of their backroom staff shake-up.

The 45-year-old, who is best mates with England boss Gareth Southgate, quit National League side Whitehawk at the end of the season.

His son, Freddie, was one of the standout performers in the England under-20 World Cup winning squad earlier this month.

It is believed that Woodman landed the job at the Emirates ahead of ex-Palace keeper Perry Suckling, who was also on the shortlist, the Mirror claim.

As part of the club’s backroom reshuffle, fitness coach Tony Colbert will now take up a technical role in the coaching team following the arrival of former Liverpool head of fitness Darren Burgess.

Burgess, who will oversee the whole medical setup at Arsenal, has been appointed the club’s director of high performance after agreeing a move from Port Adelaide.

Ex-Germany fitness guru Shad Forsythe is already in the ranks as head of athletic performance enhancement, but the Gunners are reported to have wanted a shake-up behind the scenes and Burgess was strongly recommended to Arsene Wenger.

It is rumoured they are still looking at further appointments having already appointed Team Sky’s legal and commercial expert Huss Fahmy.
