Arsene Wenger: Why this Arsenal star doesn't deserve criticism

ARSENAL boss Arsene Wenger has leapt to the defence of Mesut Ozil after recent criticism of the German.

Alejandro Moreno: Mesut Özil is not worth the trouble

The 28-year-old has had a difficult 2017 with no goals and just two assists in eight games.

Ozil has also been struggling with illness which led to below par displays against Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

The Germany international is also yet to commit his future to the Emirates with less than 18 months left on his deal.

But Wenger remains happy with Ozil's output on the pitch and feels he should not take all the blame for Arsenal's poor form.

“Mesut has improved in many aspects [such as his physical game], and in his finishing as well,” Wenger told Arsenal.com.

“He was ill and very disappointed by the fact we had gone out of the Champions League. But since he has arrived here, he has made very big strides forward.

“We have been focusing on everybody doing their job offensively and defensively.

“I believe that, instead of just highlighting one player, it’s important that everybody does it when it’s wanted from the game.

“I think we have to focus on collective performance rather than to expect anything special from one individual. Even if it’s Ozil, I believe we have to focus on our fighting spirit, togetherness and the way we want to play football.”
