Pogba's £89million return to Old Trafford was finally confirmed yesterday and he could even make his debut for United against Bournemouth on Sunday.

After previously describing the deal as 'crazy', Wenger believes a number of factors justify Pogba's high price.

"The value of a player is dependent on his talent, the expected strengthening of the team, his age and of course his resale value," Wenger said.

"When you speak about Pogba, it ticks all these boxes - but we are in a system that we don't master. We have to follow the prices paid by other people.

"That has gone up because the availability of money is much higher. That's why we may have crossed the £100m bar for the first time."

Arsenal's own transfer business has come under heavy scrutiny with £30m Granit Xhaka, £2m Rob Holding and youngsters Takuma Asano and Kelechi Nwakali brought in so far.

But Wenger insists he is happy to spend money and is actively looking to strengthen his squad.

He said: "We want to spend the money when we have it. But we respect the money we have – it is very difficult to find the quality of players who are available. Despite all the money that exists in England there is very little movement in the transfer market.

"We are in the transfer market, we are focused on concentrating on the players we have to get them ready for the season.

On the other hand, with what happened with us, of course we are looking outside to strengthen our squad."

The arrival of Pep Guardiola and Antonio Conte at Manchester City and Chelsea respectively has added to the excitement ahead of the new season.

And Wenger believes the financial power and quality of the Premier League is a major attraction to big name managers.

He added: "Let’s not be naïve – the economic power of the Premier League attracts the best players and the best managers. We know that if you want quality you have to pay the money.

"The Premier League is the most powerful, the most attractive and maybe the most popular in the world – every manager thinks ‘if I want to be recognised as a top manager, I have to go for the Premier League’.”
