Mikel Arteta has agreed a contract extension until next summer

Arteta, 33, was thought to be on his way out of the Emirates club after finding opportunities restricted last season.

He made just 12 appearances for the Gunners - his last outing coming in their 2-0 Champions League victory over Dortmund in November - as injuries ended his campaign early.

But Wenger insists the Spaniard can still contribute to the team.

“He will stay with us for one more year because he has extended his contract,” Wenger told arsenal.com.

“He’s one of the leaders in the club because he’s the captain of the team. I expect him to contribute much more than last season but he also faces a battle.

“With the number of games we have ahead, we could use his experience, his desire and his quality as it will be vital for next season.”
