Dejan Lovren: Defenders are like midfielders in Jurgen Klopp's system

MUNICH -- Dejan Lovren has told German magazine kicker that being a defender in Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool side can be like playing as a "midfielder."

Klopp has implemented his high-pressing style on Liverpool since his arrival in October 2015, meaning the defenders are higher up the pitch.

Fellow centre-back Ragnar Klavan recently spoke about how defending for Liverpool is "different" to any other team he has played in.

Klopp has talked about improving Liverpool's defence this summer, while Lovren, 28, says the setup allows for the team to be on the front foot more in the final third.

When asked whether it was difficult to follow Klopp's orders of pressing high up the pitch, Lovren replied: "Yes.

"You're more of a midfielder than a defender through that but we have good players and need to be that high because we've got the people who can change the match in one moment. That's why the system is good.

"It is sometimes risky, but if you don't risk anything in life you will never win anything. The boss always implements new ideas and we've put them into operation pretty well last season.

"He [Klopp] always makes sure he puts us into a good mood. He always sees the positive side of things.

"Sure, he'll be angry following a defeat but he'll try to get the good things out of a bad match even then. His communication with the players is very good."

Meanwhile, Liverpool's German leg of their preseason tour continues as they prepare to face Bayern Munich on Tuesday at the Allianz Arena in the Audi Cup.

Lovren, who moved to Germany with his family when he was three after war broke out in Bosnia, says it has been a long-held ambition to play against Bayern -- the club he supported in his youth.

"It's always been my dream to play against Bayern. Or for them! No, that's not an issue right now," he said. "I feel just great at Liverpool.

"It will be an interesting match in the Audi Cup, more than just a test. Sure, it won't be as intense as a Champions League match, but we always want to win.

"Of course I was a Bayern fan. I also saw games at the Olympiastadion [Bayern's old ground] and went down to Sabener Strasse [the training ground] to get autographs from [Mario] Basler, [Giovanne] Elber and [Bixente] Lizarazu."
