Jack Wilshere plays for Arsenal U23s as he steps up injury comeback

Jack Wilshere played his first game since April by completing 73 minutes for Arsenal's under-23s on Monday as he steps up his recovery from an ankle fracture.

Wilshere, 25, started next to Francis Coquelin in a central midfield role in the 3-2 comeback win over Derby, as both players aim to return to full match fitness after injuries.

It was Wilshere's first game in an Arsenal shirt in nearly a year, having spent last season on loan at Bournemouth. Wilshere had the previous two years ruined by injuries and saw his Bournemouth campaign cut short as well after injuring his ankle against Tottenham.

The midfielder has been linked with a permanent move away from Arsenal before the end of this transfer window as he is entering the final year of his contract. However, manager Arsene Wenger has said no decision has been made on Wilshere's future, and he could still have a role to play at the Emirates given Santi Cazorla's continued absence.

Wilshere, who came up from Arsenal's academy as a 16-year-old, was given a chance to play with the club's latest young hope in 17-year-old Reiss Nelson, who netted an impressive brace as the Gunners rallied from 2-0 down at Derby.
