Arsene Wenger ready to recall Hector Bellerin as wing-back against Stoke

Arsene Wenger believes Hector Bellerin can thrive in a wing-back role, with the Spaniard likely to replace the injured Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain at Stoke on Saturday.

Oxlade-Chamberlain has been one of Arsenal's best players since Wenger switched to a back-three formation, but limped off with a hamstring injury in Wednesday's 2-0 win at Southampton.

That means Bellerin is set to play at right wing-back at the bet365 Stadium, where Arsenal will target another victory to keep their hopes alive of finishing in the top four.

Bellerin already played in the position against Leicester last week, and Wenger said the Spain international is well suited for the role.

"Yes he is, he is an offensive player," Wenger said after the win at Southampton. "He started as a right midfielder and we transformed him into a full-back."

Bellerin has so far been one of the victims of the formation switch, as he has only started one of the Gunners' last six matches. That comes after he was jeered by fans in the 3-0 loss at Crystal Palace, which led Wenger to change his tactics.

But the Arsenal boss said Bellerin has maintained "a fantastic mentality."

"He went through a difficult period when he came back from his ankle injury, but I never questioned his attitude. He has great spirit," Wenger said.

Wenger also said Laurent Koscielny has "a small chance" to be fit after missing the Southampton match with a calf problem.

"He was not far. He practised on Tuesday but it was risky to play him at Southampton," Wenger said.

Arsenal have struggled at Stoke, and Wenger called on his team to "show character" at the Britannia.

"Traditionally there is a fierce rivalry and they had always a very direct game against us," the Arsenal manager said. "Overall, I must say as well that they have had good teams.

"Stoke are now regular participants in the Premier League for years, and that means that anybody who goes there is in trouble. We have to show character again.

"We know we have to play to win the games, so let's keep the focus on the way we want to play and on our team spirit."
