Liverpool already trail Premier League leaders Manchester City by nine points, mostly down to sloppy mistakes at the back.

The Reds have shipped 12 goals from their opening eight games, with only Watford conceding more in the top 10 in the table.

Hargreaves reckons Klopp now needs to strengthen Liverpool’s back line in the transfer market, having got the attack down to a tee.

Klopp failed to bring in Southampton centre-half Virgil van Dijk and RB Leipzig midfielder Naby Keita in the summer.

And while Liverpool have already agreed a deal to sign Keita next summer, Hargreaves reckons those arrivals would have sorted out their leaky defence this term.

“The thing is the Premier League is so much more competitive than the Bundesliga,” Hargreaves told The Express.

“Liverpool attacking wise are up there with anyone.

“But with Klopp give him time and with money he can try to address these [defensive] problems.

“With Van Dijk and Keita this summer, he knows as well. I hope they stay together. It’s a special relationship there and they seem to suit each other.”

Liverpool are back in action at Wembley on Monday when they take on Tottenham.
