Mike Ashley’s decision to sell up and news that Amanda Staveley’s mega-rich PCP Partners Group, have emerged as frontunners to buy him out has sparked mass excitement on Tyneside.

And while Benitez insists his focus is on today’s home game against Crystal Palace, he knows new owners could see Newcastle fulfilling their vast potential.

Five parties have signed non-disclosure agreements and are undertaking due diligence with Staveley’s Middle East-based group, worth £30billion, understood to be willing to plough up to £200m into team-strengthening.

Benitez revealed he’s preparing for all scenarios, including one in which he hits the transfer jackpot.

“When I signed here, it was because I could see the potential and not just because of the fans and the city,” he said.

“This is one of the top sides in England if you put everything together.

“The question is, is it reaching its level? Obviously, no. Can we do it? I think so.

“We have to do everything right. It is not just if you have money, you have to have the right players with the right mentality here.”

Nevertheless, Benitez knows his hand could be significantly strengthened if new owners provide him with more funds than Ashley did in the summer.

And that’s why preparing for different scenarios by drawing up a series of shopping lists for the transfer window.

“First of all, you have to look for the best players in the market,” he added. “Afterwards, you think of second, third and fourth options.

“It is too early but we have been working hard and will have the targets identified.”

Benitez expects a frenzied atmosphere inside St James’ Park with the Toon Army celebrating news that Ashley could be on his way out.

His job, he insists, is to ensure the players aren’t distracted by the takeover talk.

“I know from reading the press in the last few days, it’s really important for everyone here,” he said.

“But I will not change my approach for this game nor for the next few games. It doesn’t change anything for me.

“If we have money in January or we don’t, we still have to do our job and be sure the players are focused.”
