The Blues played host to Pep Guardiola's team at Stamford Bridge on Saturday knowing a home win would draw the sides level on points.

But they found themselves overrun by City and were a goal down on 67 minutes when Kevin De Bruyne fired past Thibaut Courtois.

Chelsea never recovered from that setback and their toothless attack, with Alvaro Morata subbed off in the first half through injury, could not get them back into the game.

Former Premier League and England ace Pearce has suggested City's class means Chelsea can be excused for the defeat.

He believes the loss of Morata to a hamstring problem could be problematic for Antonio Conte's side going forwards though.

Summing up Chelsea's season so far, Pearce told Sky Sports: "It was an awful start to the season with the defeat against Burnley, and then they got better and better.

"They've lost a major game against one of their rivals, Manchester City, but that can be forgiven I think because City were so good.

"My question is whether there is cover for Alvaro Morata if he is out for any length in time.

"I think they've got two major rivals in the Manchester clubs, and it won't be easy to overcome them."

Chelsea face a two-week wait for their next Premier League fixture due to the international break.

Conte's men return to action against struggling London rivals Crystal Palace on Saturday October 14 (3pm).
