The French midfielder has made just four appearances since joining the Magpies from Bordeaux 20 months ago, having failed to make a league start under Rafa Benitez.

Saivet spent most of last season on loan at St Etienne, whose coach Christophe Galtier accused the Senegal international of losing his appetite for the game.

But despite that damning verdict and Newcastle’s attempts to offload him during the summer, the 26-year-old insists he’s fired up and ready to prove his critics wrong.

“Maybe one day, I will get my chance to show what I can do,” he said.

“In football, you can start a season in the stands or on the bench and finish it in the team.

“Not playing isn’t easy but I am working hard to get back in contention.

“The manager has told me we need everybody in the squad so it is up to me to prove I can play in his team.”
