The Reds kicked off the 2017/18 campaign with great optimism and were looking to challenge on domestic and European fronts.

But the same issue at the back which hampered them last term has come back to haunt them this time around.

Liverpool have already conceded 19 goals this season and are out of the Carabao Cup thanks to a 2-0 defeat at Leicester.

And, speaking on Tuesday night’s edition of Sky Sports chat show The Debate, Schmeichel revealed his confusion as to why Liverpool boss Klopp has not acted to find a solution.

Schmeichel told Kelly Cates and Paul Merson: "You don’t see someone [in defence] who really takes control, [who] really gives the impression that: ‘I want to defend every ball that comes my way’.

"Someone like Jurgen Klopp, who comes in with such a great reputation and did so fantastically well with [Borussia] Dortmund, I cannot understand why he hasn’t addressed the obvious problem that Liverpool have."

Liverpool were desperate to sign Southampton star Virgil Van Dijk to bolster their defence this summer.

However, they were forced to cool their interest when Saints accused them of tapping the centre-back up.

Former Liverpool man Jan Molby recently suggested Klopp made a mistake by not targeting a different player in the wake of that situation.

He said: "Was Van Dijk really the only defender who would have improved this team? I refuse to believe that was the case.

"Of course some weren't for sale but part of scouting is finding players. I wonder about the boy Davinson Sanchez, who went to Spurs from Ajax.

"Why didn't we show any interest in him? I still think we're a more attractive proposition than Spurs. It makes you wonder sometimes."
