The Doncaster manager travels to Arsenal to take on his dad’s former adversary in the Carabao Cup tonight.

And ahead of the tie, Ferguson has shed light on the Frenchman’s relationship with his dad, insisting the pair are good friends.

“There's an enormous amount of respect between my dad and Arsene Wenger,” he told Sky Sports.

“A huge amount of respect, they get on very, very well.

Wenger and Ferguson endured a frosty relationship before the latter retired as Manchester United boss in 2013.

The pinnacle of their heated rivalry arguably came in 2002 when, after Fergie claimed his United side were better than the Gunners’ title winning squad in 2002, Wenger responded by saying ‘Everybody thinks they have the prettiest wife at home’.

The Scot also called Wenger a ‘novice’ when he first arrived in England.

But Ferguson’s son Darren claims the feud merely stemmed from their competitive natures, and is looking forward to pitting his wits against Wenger tonight.

“Listen, they were competitive, both of them,” he added.

“They had to have that sort of competitive edge towards it when they were managing but I'm looking forward to coming up against him.

“He [Wenger] is a great manager and obviously the aim is to get one over him but we know it is going to be difficult.”
