Jurgen Klopp has been criticised by German counterpart Didi Hamann

That is the verdict of former Reds midfielder Didi Hamann.

The Merseyside outfit started the season in electric form, taking seven points from three games.

However, after hammering Arsenal 4-0 at Anfield, the club were on the receiving end of a 5-0 thrashing at Manchester City last weekend.

That was followed up by a 2-2 draw against Sevilla in the Champions League.

And Hamann believes Liverpool's failure to fix their defensive issues shows how little progress they are making under Klopp.

"I don't know where this team is going to go," Hamann told Irish broadcaster RTE.

"He [Klopp] came to the club 18 months ago and it was obvious that the defence needed reinforcement.

"This was the part of the team that needed strengthening and developing.

"Have I seen progress in the last 18 months? No.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is comforted by new boss Jurgen Klopp

"Are they any better than they were 18 months ago? No."

Klopp's failure to bring in a top class centre-back during the summer has been scrutinised.

Liverpool have shipped eight goals in their opening four league games.

"I've rarely seen a more unbalanced squad in Liverpool's history - or in any other Premier League team. It's top heavy," Hamann added.

"They are prone to the odd mistake and it puts added pressure on the offence.

"I don't think this team is going anywhere."

Liverpool strengthened their attacking options in the summer by signing Mohamed Salah and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

But their inability to land long-term target Virgil van Dijk is proving costly.
