Philippe Coutinho will be staying at Liverpool, despite intense interest from Barcelona this summer.

Spanish football expert Guillem Balague claims the La Liga giants have now accepted they will not be signing the Brazilian before tonight’s transfer deadline.

Liverpool have stood firm on Coutinho all summer, rejecting several bids from Barca.

Balague tweeted: “In English: nothing new really.

“FCB and Coutinho entourage have finally accepted there is no way Coutinho is leaving.

“It took them some time”.

Liverpool transfer target Virgil Van Dijk was the subject of no formal bids this summer.

That’s according to the Irish Independent, who say the Reds were expected to make an offer for the Holland international on deadline day.

Van Dijk’s future has been talked about for most of 2017 after he established himself as one of the Premier League’s most in-demand players.

And a move to Liverpool appeared to be a formality until they were accused of tapping him up and forced to end their pursuit of his signature in June.

Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City had all been interested in signing Van Dijk as well this summer.

Liverpool never made a formal bid for Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk

Gary Neville does not think Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will be first-choice at Liverpool.

“He doesn’t get in the best XI,” he said on Sky Sports of the 24-year-old.

“(Philippe) Coutinho, (Emre) Can, (Jordan) Henderson, (Adam) Lallana, (Mohamed) Salah, (Sadio) Mane, (Roberto) Firmino all play in front of him.

“Everyone seems to be eulogising over Oxlade-Chamberlain in the last 24 hours.

“He doesn’t get in their best XI, he doesn’t strengthen their team.

“What he does do is strengthen the squad? He’s a player who, to be fair, could play in Jurgen Klopp's style.

“He’s got huge talent, he’s a decent lad, but I think he has two or three areas he has to significantly improve.”
