That’s the opinion of former Arsenal star Ray Parlour who thinks the Reds should test the Saints with the offer.

Liverpool have been linked with Van Dijk all summer with the Dutchman handing in a transfer request at St Mary’s.

The Reds cooled their interest temporarily when Southampton accused them of tapping up the 26-year-old.

“You look at the situation, Sakho went to Crystal Palace last year. He’s a defender who you could maybe throw in (to a deal),” Parlour said on talkSPORT.

“You could say ‘Saints we could have a swap deal’, Sakho for Van Dijk with a bit of money on top.

“This week there will be so may deals go through because people start panicking.

“Plenty of clubs want their business done early but others do it at the last minute. People give in. Selling players and bidding for players.

“To win the league you have to be solid at times in games. Especially in Europe you have teams very good going forward. Away goals are massive and you have to be defensive minded.

“Look at this game at the weekend against Arsenal. They’re not the best. You’re expecting goals in that game.”

Van Dijk is currently training on his own away from the rest of his Southampton team-mates.
