Virgil van Dijk will join Liverpool this summer, Mark Lawrenson claims.

The Dutch defender, 26, handed in a transfer request last week in hope of forcing through a Southampton exit, with the Reds and Chelsea keen.

And pundit Lawrenson says Van Dijk is heading to Anfield.

"I think they will end up getting Van Dijk," Lawrenson told BBC Sport. "I have no inside knowledge but it would appear he wants to come to Liverpool.

"He brings quality, can play from the back, which is great, and with four centre-backs - Dejan Lovren, Joel Matip and Ragnar Klavan - it brings competition for places.

"Bringing in a quality player improves the games of the players around them. It keeps everyone on their toes.

"If you know you are going to play in week in, week out it is never quite the same.

"If you turn up on Friday and think 'I didn't play very well last week, am I going to play?' it is completely different."

Ivan Rakitic could be heading to Liverpool in a deal for Philippe Coutinho.

Barcelona want the Brazil international this summer, with the La Liga giants having a £90m bid rejected last night.

And Spanish transfer outlet Don Balon say Barca have offered Rakitic in a swap deal for Coutinho.

They claim Klopp is a big fan of the Croatia international and he would love him at Anfield.

Barca want to sign Coutinho by Sunday.

The playmaker has been tipped to replace Neymar at the Nou Camp following the winger's world-record move to Paris St-Germain last week.

And Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo say Barca are refusing to take no for an answer.

They claim Barca want Coutinho at the club by Sunday.
