Alexandre Lacazette has signed for Arsenal

Lacazette has finally completed his £52m transfer from Lyon and will join his new team-mates on their pre-season tour of Australia.

The 26-year-old, who has signed a five-year-contract, scored 37 goals last season and Wenger claims he will help transform Arsenal’s fortunes.

He said: “We are very happy to have Alexandre join our group. He has shown over a number of years that he can score goals and that he is a very efficient finisher.

“As well, he has very interesting technical qualities and a strong character. So he is a guy who is a great addition for us, and someone who will help us challenge at the top level this season.”

Arsenal failed to qualify for the Champions League last season but Wenger believes Lacazette can help get them straight back in the top four and challenging for the title again.

The Frenchman, who has 11 caps for his country, will join his new team-mates on the flight to Sydney this weekend.

He could make his Arsenal debut against Sydney FC next Thursday, and will be showcased in front of home fans at the Emirates Cup at the end of the month.

His arrival makes it all the more likely that Olivier Giroud will leave the club, with Everton pushing hard for his signature.

Giroud gave an interview earlier this week insisting he wanted to stay with the Gunners but the Merseysiders believe they can land him with a £20m bid.

Lacazette described his transfer as a dream come true yesterday, saying: “I am, of course, delighted and very proud too because Arsenal is a legendary club.

“Throughout my childhood, thanks to Thierry Henry and other French players, I always dreamed of playing for this club so today that dream has been fulfilled.

“Arsenal’s past - I like clubs with a history. Also the fact that the manager has been here for a while shows that it is a stable club which I like.

“In addition there are quite a few French players here, which makes it easier to settle in. Arsenal is also the club that plays the best football in England so I really wanted to come here.

“I like to use my pace and to link up with my team-mates. I like to score goals, of course, but that’s not all that I’m about. I love good flowing football where the whole team is engaged.

“First of all you need to have players behind you who pass the ball well, resulting in good goalscoring opportunities. Also every time I take a shot at goal it’s because I believe I can score.

“I don’t just shoot for the sake of it. I always try to choose the best option, whether that is to pass or to shoot. I also try to keep as calm as possible. All that is achieved by a lot of hard work.

“I want to give one hundred per cent in every match. I want to show I’m worthy of the shirt. I want to do everything I can to make sure we win titles.”
