And while he failed to live up to the expectations attached to that price tag, he seems to have made an impression on Jose Mourinho.
The former Chelsea boss is apparently considering taking the role of skipper away from Rooney if he stays at United.
And a source has revealed that Pogba is one of the names in the frame to take over from the 31-year-old ahead of the 2017/18 campaign.
They told The Sun: "Wayne is facing losing the captaincy next season if he stays.
"He is out of contract next year. Jose is already thinking about who to delegate the squad responsibilities to.
"There's a few obvious names in the frame with Michael [Carrick] being at the club for so long and Paul a leader at the club.
"Wayne had hardly any game time last year and the feeling around the camp is it is his time to leave after a great service.
"It’s the elephant in the room at Carrington, will Wazza still be captain if he’s here next season?
"He’s obviously a club legend and still holds a lot of sway with the lads but the backroom staff have seen a few leaders emerging after last season."
Aside from Pogba and Carrick, United midfielder Ander Herrera is said to be in the running for the captaincy.
Rooney, meanwhile, is free to leave with Everton and clubs in the USA and China thought to be keen on signing him.
The veteran signalled his intent to once again make his mark at United by returning to training this week though.
