Mendy has emerged as one of Europe’s most exciting defenders following his stunning season at Monaco.

The 22-year-old France international moved to Monaco from Marseille last summer and was key to their Ligue 1 title success this term.

Mendy’s fine form has attracted interest from a number of clubs.

ESPN report that Liverpool will battle Premier League rivals City for his signature.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp is determined to sign a new left-back this summer and will have a hefty budget to spend.

But it is said that City remain in pole position to land Mendy and deal is looking increasingly likely.

That would be an obvious blow to Liverpool’s transfer plans but could be good news for Manchester United.

Both Manchester giants are also being heavily linked with Tottenham’s Danny Rose.

The Mirror claimed earlier this week that Spurs are bracing themselves to lose the 26-year-old England international.

Rose is keen to move back up north and United are said to leading the race for him ahead of their neighbours City.

Should Pep Guardiola snap up Mendy ahead of Liverpool, United would be clear to make their move for Rose.
