The Burnley defender looks to be closing in on a return to Old Trafford after a fine season at Turf Moor.

His good form has seen him earn a call up to the England squad and receive rave reviews from pundits and fans alike.

Today The Times said the 24-year-old was close to an agreement with United about a £25m transfer.

He only left Old Trafford in 2015 for just £2m and could be heading back for over 12 times that amount.

The Independent say he's even started informing those close to him that he will probably make the move.

He has told friends it is likely that he will be back in the famous red strip next season.

Keane graduated from United's academy in 2011 and went on numerous loans before being sold by Louis van Gaal.

However, current United boss Jose Mourinho has spoken recently about a number of payers who left Manchester under Van Gaal that he would have kept.

It appears Keane's name is one that would have been on that list as he inches towards a comeback.

But it will not be easy for United to get it over the line.

Clarets chairman Mike Garlick insisted earlier this week that his side were ready to play hardball over Keane and other top stars.

He said: “Let’s roll it forward a year, what’s the prize for staying up again? Another £120-130m?

“So if we miss out on one or two fees and get that, I know what I’d take.

“The most important thing for the fans to know is that we don’t actually have to sell any player.

“Going forward it’s got to be on our terms and terms that are right for us. Do we need to sell anyone? No. If we want to keep players, we’ll keep them.”
