LACKED INSPIRATION: Spurs were flat as they drew their opening Europa League game [GETTY]

Partizan aren't called that for nothing and for the most part the locals treated Tottenham to a hostile but good-natured evening of Europa League football.

But there are always a few idiots who spoil the fun, unfortunately all too often in this part of the world, and doubtless those who came up with a sick and insulting banner are feeling proud of themselves.

Spurs can feel proud of themselves for entirely different reasons, even if the closest they came to opening the scoring on their latest European adventure came after 65 seconds.

Summer signing Ben Davies' corner eventually fell at the feet of Harry Kane and he was unlucky to see his strike from a tight angle smack the bar.

Fellow new boys Benjamin Stambouli and Federico Fazio also impressed on their first starts for Spurs, contributing to a calm an assured display in the face of constant noise form the locals.

No mean feat given Partizan headed into the game on a run of seven straight wins on home soil.

But that home soil is due up for the next game at the Partizan Stadium, Serbia's Euro 2016 qualifier against Albania, and the rutted turf did little for the spectacle.

Partizan did eventually manage to respond to the deafening noise from their fans, but left it until first-half injury time to do it.

PLONKER: Partizan fans hold up the horrible banner [GETTY]

A quick counter from a Spurs corner, set in motion by Serbia goalkeeper Milan Lukac, allowed Danilo Pantic to burst forward down the right.

The 17-year-old made it all the way to the edge of the Tottenham box but skipper for the evening Hugo Lloris had little trouble gathering up the low strike.

But it inspired Partizan to get on the front foot after the break, although a Petar Grbic effort was little stronger than a back pass.

The introduction of Roberto Soldado and Erik Lamela failed to add more penetration to Tottenham's play.

But even as Partizan continued to push forward there was little in their attack to worry Tottenham's re-jigged defence.

Next up for Spurs in the Europa League is the visit of Besiktas to White Hart Lane. No shy, retiring wallflowers the Besiktas fans, even on their travels.

But Tottenham know how to turn up the volume under the floodlights too.

After a well-deserved point on the road, Spurs should have more than enough to ensure safe passage out of Group C on home soil.
