Arsenal fail in deadline day move for Jonny Evans as West Brom laugh off last-ditch £12m offer as derisory

  • West Brom dismiss Arsenal's £12m bid for Jonny Evans on transfer deadline day
  • The Baggies were willing to sell the defender for the right price this month
  • Arsenal have already spent big this month of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang
  • Evans misses West Brom's game against Manchester City with hamstring injury

Arsenal have failed in a last-minute move for West Bromwich Albion defender Jonny Evans after their £12million bid fell well short of the asking price and was laughed off as derisory.

Sportsmail understands Arsenal's offer was half of what West Brom wanted for their captain and any deal now faces a monumental race against time ahead of the deadline.

Speculation mounted that a deal could still be on after the 30-year-old was left out of West Brom's squad to face Manchester City on Wednesday night, but it soon surfaced that he was absent due to a hamstring injury.

West Brom manager Alan Pardew had previously warned interested clubs that he would set an 'early deadline' for his captain's departure.

Speaking ahead of West Brom's FA Cup game against Liverpool last weekend, Pardew said: 'If they ring up late Tuesday they're probably not going to get the response they want.

'If they ring today, tomorrow, they'll get a nicer response.'

Arsenal appeared to have a clear run at Evans on the final day of their busiest ever January window after Manchester City opted to sign Aymeric Laporte in a club-record £57m deal instead.

West Brom had set an asking price of £30m for the Northern Ireland international last summer, but were prepared to accept slightly less with just 18 months left on his contract.

Arsene Wenger saw his frail defence come unstuck once again on Tuesday evening as they conceded three times against struggling Swansea.

They have now conceded 34 goals in the Premier League this season, more than bottom-of-the-table West Brom (31).
