Manchester City have tied talisman Kevin De Bruyne down to a new five-and-a-half-year contract.

De Bruyne agreed terms last week on his £280,000-a-week, which could see him pocket around an additional £70,000 in bonuses.

Murmurs about interest from Real Madrid and Barcelona surfaced, with City moving quickly to complete a deal until 2023, with Brazilian midfielder Fred, 24, edging closer to a move to City from Shakhtar Donetsk.

‘It was pretty easy decision,’ said De Bruyne after Monday night’s announcement. ‘Obviously you hear a lot of people talk about other clubs.

‘At the moment we are one of the best clubs in the world. The way this club is working as a whole unit is unbelievable. I’ve never witnessed it like that before. I think maybe the best thing is that I’ve performed well in the big games. Hopefully we can go far in all competitions.’

De Bruyne is settled in Manchester with his wife Michele and son Mason, and wants to give Pep Guardiola his best years.

‘When we came here, Michele was already expecting,’ said the 26-year-old. ‘Everything went so well and the family is very happy. My wife also knows that for us it is the best decision to stay here.’

He added: 'I am really happy to have signed this new deal. As I've said previously, my intention has always been to stay here at City, where I've felt at home from day one.

'Not only are we winning – we are playing great football. It's a pleasure to be a part of and I'm really excited about what we can achieve in the coming years.'

De Bruyne has scored 31 goals in 122 games and made 50 assists since joining City for £55million from Wolfsburg in August 2015.

He added: 'I feel very honoured and blessed that I can go on for the next five and a half years here. I think from the moment I came here I got a lot of support.

'I know a lot of times they sing that song in the games and I feel really appreciated, so hopefully we can have some good times in the next five and a half years.'

The club's director of football Txiki Begiristain said: 'Kevin's new deal is great news for our club.

'He has shown this season how important he is to the team and has been integral in everything we've done so far.

'We are thrilled he has committed his long-term future to Manchester City.'

De Bruyne becomes the third City player to sign a contract in the last week after Nicolas Otamendi and Fernandinho agreed new terms.
