Paul Pogba makes a ball boy's day but is snubbed by Wayne Rooney... while Sam Allardyce STILL can't beat Jose Mourinho - Six things you missed from Everton 0-2 Manchester United

Second-half stunners from Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard helped Manchester United moved up to second in the Premier League with a 2-0 victory over Everton at Goodison Park.

Martial fired home from outside the box to put United into the lead on 57 minutes before Lingard secured the points with an equally brilliant strike in the closing stages.

If you were too busy or too hungover to catch the finer details of the Goodison Park clash, fear not. Sportsmail's DANIEL MATTHEWS kept a beady eye on proceedings and has picked out some things you may have missed.

A New Year's Day-out for the Rooney clan

The Premier League clash was a special occasion for Wayne Rooney, in particular. The Everton veteran was facing his former side again having left Old Trafford for his boyhood club in the summer.

But he was not the only Rooney inside Goodison on Monday. Watching on from the stands were his wife Colleen and three sons Kai, Kit and Klay.

Rooney wore the armband for Sam Allardyce's side on Monday but he was unable to add to his tally of 10 league goals for the season as they succumbed to defeat.

But there was no room for emotion in the tunnel...

For only the seventh time since returning to Merseyside, Rooney was given the honour of leading out his boyhood club against United at Goodison.

Standing opposite him in the tunnel was United's skipper for the day and Rooney's former team-mate Paul Pogba. But the ex-England captain appeared to have little time for pleasantries ahead of kick off.

Pogba was keen to greet the likes of Morgan Schneiderlin and Michael Keane, Rooney was fully in the zone and would barely even look at the Frenchman.

Someone was keen to see Pogba, mind...

The Everton skipper may have been less than friendly with his former team-mate ahead of kick off on Monday. But not everyone connected with the blue half of Merseyside was so cold towards the Frenchman.

At full time, Pogba handed his match day shirt to an Everton ball boy who, despite his loyalties, was over the moon with the gift.

It was a nice touch from the midfielder, who played a hand in both goals for the away side.

When United go in front, they stay in front

As Everton pushed for a late equaliser on Monday, the Goodison faithful remained optimistic that their side could peg United back and earn at least a share of the spoils.

But, in truth, they should have known the writing was on the way on the wall as soon as Martial opened the scoring. Because United simply do not let a 1-0 lead slip.

Every single time they have scored the opening goal in a league game this season, they have gone on to win the game.

United remain Everton's bogey team

Victory at Goodison on Monday earned United a crucial three points and took them above Chelsea and up to second in the table.

But it also brought up a special milestone for Mourinho's side. They have now beaten Everton 35 times in the Premier League. No team has ever beaten a particular opponent more.

Thanks to second-half strikes from Martial and Lingard, United are unbeaten in the last seven league and cup meetings between the two sides (winning five, drawing two).

Big Sam's Mourinho hoodoo goes on

Sam Allardyce has worked wonders since taking over from the sacked Ronald Koeman in November.

But there remains one challenge the 63-year-old is unable to overcome. Defeat on Monday means Allardyce has now faced Mourinho 12 times in the Premier League and won none of them (losing nine and drawing three).

The Portuguese is the manager Allardyce has faced the most without winning. Mourinho, meanwhile, has never faced another manager more without losing.
