Crystal Palace 2-3 Arsenal — FIVE THINGS WE LEARNED: TV star Jack Whitehall was all smiles and Calum Chambers benefits from mind games

  • Comedian Jack Whitehall was at Selhurst Park to watch his beloved Arsenal
  • Defender Chambers was recalled for clash as Arsenal switched to a back three
  • Roy Hodgson showed his class by welcoming Arsene Wenger on landmark night

Arsenal marked Arsene Wenger's record-equalling match as a Premier League manager by winning 3-2 at Crystal Palace.

At a time when there are still doubts about Wenger's abilities despite his remarkable longevity — in overseeing his 810th Premier League fixture the Frenchman equalled the record of Sir Alex Ferguson — his team displayed so many of the traits he inspires.

They often outplayed their hosts, securing victory when a finish from Shkodran Mustafi and two goals from Alexis Sanchez ensured they remain sixth and continue their push for the top four, but were also frequently stretched.

Sportsmail's Sami Mokbel highlights the five things we learned.

Comedian Jack Whitehall was all smiles as Arsenal edged a five-goal thriller at Selhurst Park

Comedian Jack Whitehall was at Selhurst Park to watch his beloved Arsenal on Thursday night, meeting Palace manager Roy Hodgson before the game.

He’s not had much to laugh about of late; the Gunners heading into this encounter with just one victory from their previous five Premier League outings.

Shkodran Mustafi’s 25th minute opener would have put a smile on the funnyman’s face, though.

Just over 24 hours after saying: ‘We didn’t score enough goals away from home, so that’s why I switched to a back four’, Arsene Wenger reverted to a back-three for the clash at Selhurst Park.

Mind games from the Arsenal manager. Calum Chambers was the prime beneficiary, handed his first Premier League start for Arsenal since the opening day of last season.

Classy gesture from a classy man.

You can forgive Andros Townsend for having a wider smile on his face after smashing home Crystal Palace’s leveller.

The winger grew up a Tottenham fan before going on to make 91 appearances for the club after coming through their youth academy.

Needless to say Townsend would have enjoyed that one.

Had former manager Neil Warnock had his way, Van Dijk could have been lining up for Crystal Palace.

When asked about the Dutchman’s switch to Anfield, the Cardiff boss said: ‘When I was at Palace, the centre half I was looking at was Van Dijk and I suggested we buy him for £6million.

'At the time the chief scout said he wasn’t quick enough. I hope he’s watching this morning that chief scout, £75m? It made me smile when I saw that.’
