Gary Johnson believes he might get an expensive bottle of wine for Christmas after Bristol City's shock 2-1 win knocked Manchester United out of the Carabao Cup.

Former City manager Johnson, whose son Lee manages the Ashton Gate club, is hoping for the present after Jose Mourinho was unable to share the £450 wine following the game.

Johnson snr, who manages Cheltenham, thinks both his son and Mourinho were too busy following the game to meet up and share the wine which Lee had bought.

He told BBC Breakfast: 'I can see myself getting a very expensive bottle of wine for Christmas from Lee.

'He did have a chat with him (Mourinho) for about 20 minutes at the start of the game but Lee had to do a lot of media after the game so they didn't meet after.

'With Bristol City winning it was a shock and they both had to do quite a few interviews. Jose probably had to get back on the bus and probably was happy to get out of there pretty sharpish.'

Johnson believes his son, who confessed to reading Mourinho's books before their sides met on the pitch, reaped the rewards of studying the Portuguese's methods.

'He's already bled me dry so he's got to go on to somebody else now,' he added. 'He's a real sports networker, he loves talking to people - he's like an information sponge. Who better than Jose Mourinho to have a little chat with.'

With a semi-final against Manchester City to look forward to, Johnson believes his son's side will give a good account of themselves against the Premier League leaders.

'(They face) Man City in the semi-final which is unbelievable. They deserved it, Lee's boys were relentless, they were like little wasps buzzing around the Man United superstars and the relentlessness paid off.

'The way the boys are playing at the moment, with the spirit they've got, they deserve their place in the semi-final and they're going to give it a go.

'Whatever happens now that was Lee's cup final against Manchester United yesterday.'
