Manchester United's pursuit of Joao Mario has been boosted after Inter Milan admitted the player is unhappy with a lack of playing time in Italy

United hoped to bring the 24-year-old to Old Trafford in the summer of 2016 but he opted to sign on at the San Siro instead in a £40million move.

However Mario, who impressed for Portugal during their Euro 2016 triumph, has struggled to cement his place as a regular first-team player.

Mario has made just 11 appearances for Inter this term and sporting director Walter Sabatini admitted he has made his unhappiness known to the club.

'Joao has some issues with the lack of playing time,' Sabatini told Sky Italia.

'We don't want to lose him. He is our player and we want to keep him.'

Mario has had to make do with a bit-part role this season, with manager Luciano Spalletti preferring Marcelo Brozovic.

The Portugal international's struggle has reportedly alerted United, who could renew their interest when the transfer window reopens next month.

Jose Mourinho remains keen on the former Sporting player, and reports in Italy suggest Henrikh Mkhitaryan could sign for Inter as part of any deal.
