QPR, MK Dons and Barnsley track Stevenage striker Danny Newton, who rose to prominence after schooling at Jamie Vardy's V9 Academy

  • Stevenage signed Danny Newton after he scored 36 goals for Tamworth last year
  • The 26-year-old is now being tracked by a number of Championship clubs
  • Newton, born in Liverpool, has scored nine goals for Stevenage this season

Stevenage striker Danny Newton is being followed by QPR, MK Dons and Barnsley.

Newton shot to prominence in the summer as a graduate of Jamie Vardy's V9 Academy which resulted in Stevenage signing him from non-league Tamworth, where he banged in 36 goals last season.

The Liverpool-born forward has adjusted well to league football, scoring nine goals, including two against Swindon Town earlier this month when he came on as a substitute to help secure their 5-2 FA Cup Second Round win.

Stevenage manager Darren Sarll has been effusive in his praise of the striker's work ethic, his determination to make the grade and to improve.

Sharing similarities to Jamie Vardy's career path, Newton worked in a factory in Leicester prior to making his breakthrough from the Conference North and has caught the eye of Championship scouts with his displays and often spectacular goals.

Indeed, his second against Swindon, where he ran from his own half before finishing, was voted goal of the round by BBC viewers.

QPR, Barnsley and MK Dons are watching Newton's progress closely and, should he continue to impress, he could make another step up the league ladder next month.
