Stoke boss Mark Hughes insists miserable run against Tottenham won't play a part in their crunch Premier League clash: 'We are aware of our record... it's about time that changed'

Mark Hughes insists Stoke's miserable recent record against Tottenham will not play on their minds at Wembley Stadium on Saturday.

The Potters have lost 4-0 in each of their last three games against Spurs and were four down at half-time the last time the teams met in February. 

Boss Hughes said: 'Some of the players who were involved in those games aren't with us any more, we've got a new group. It's a different make-up in terms of the way we approach games, sometimes the way we shape up as well.

'Every game is different, every season is different, so I don't anticipate it will play too readily on anybody's mind. It will be about just affecting the game in a positive manner for ourselves.

'Obviously we're aware of our past record so it's about time that changed.'

Hughes will surely consider it a decent time to meet Mauricio Pochettino's side, with Spurs' Premier League campaign having dwindled recently.

They have failed to win any of their last three games, drawing with West Brom and Watford and losing to Leicester, and have slipped to sixth in the table.

'They're a good side,' said Hughes. 'At the moment teams are maybe frustrating them and they're finding it more difficult to break teams down. They're possibly not as free-flowing as they have been in the past in certain games.

'Last season it was the most difficult game going up against Spurs we felt. Man City have gone up about two or three levels this year but if you look at all the other teams, for the most part we've done OK with them.

'Spurs have been the team who have caused us more problems. We're looking to address that and make sure we're better in terms of our performance against them and make sure we're a lot more difficult to beat.'

This will be Stoke's first match at Wembley since their FA Cup final appearance in 2011.

Ryan Shawcross is the only survivor from that side and Hughes will stress to his players the importance of the match rather than the occasion.

He said: 'It's a bit difficult to know which way players will take it. A number of them have played there before, other players won't have.

'As long as they don't take cameras on the pitch and start taking photos, I'm quite comfortable with them approaching the game in the way they see fit.

'We'll just emphasise it's a Premier League game, it's an important game for us, we want to get some more points on the back of having a good performance and good result last time out.'

Last weekend's victory over Swansea put distance between Stoke and the bottom three but came at a cost, with defender Bruno Martins Indi expected to be out for up to eight weeks with a groin injury.

Striker Jese Rodriguez, who was punished for leaving the bench early last Saturday, is also unavailable having dashed home to be with his seriously ill baby son but Geoff Cameron returns following concussion.
