Tottenham's Premier League match against West Ham has been moved from New Year's Eve to January 4 less than a month before the game was set to take place.

The Premier League have put the fixture back by four days due to 'transport issues' after a safety group advised against a full capacity crowd at Wembley.

The rearranged game means Tottenham will have just 48 hours to recover from their trip to Swansea on Tuesday, January 2 before hosting West Ham on the Thursday.

Tottenham will also be in FA Cup third-round action on the weekend of January 6-7 meaning they could potentially face a run of three matches in six days - though their cup game is likely to take place on Sunday, January 7.

A statement released by the Premier League said they initially chose December 31 for Tottenham vs West Ham with the expectation a regular crowd capacity would be able to attend.

However the Safety Advisory Group could only recommend a crowd of 43,000 due to transport resources being stretched around London on New Year's Eve.

Tottenham tweeted to apologise for the delay in confirming the details for the fixture but said the decision had been made so more supporters will be able to attend.

The New Year's Eve fixtures were released on November 3 with Tottenham's game against West Ham originally set to kick off at 2.15pm on December 31.

The other December 31 fixtures are Crystal Palace's home tie against Manchester City at 12pm and Arsenal's trip to The Hawthorns to face West Brom at 4.30pm.

West Ham have already visited Tottenham this season when they came from two goals down to win 3-2 in the Carabao Cup in October.

Tottenham broke the Premier League's attendance record when 80,827 fans saw Mauricio Pochettino's side thrash Liverpool 4-1 at Wembley on October 22.

The north Londoners are playing at Wembley this season while work is completed on their new ground, the redeveloped White Hart Lane, ahead of next campaign.

Tottenham drew 1-1 with Watford at Vicarage Road on Saturday meaning they have taken just two points from their last four league matches.

West Ham were beaten 2-1 by league leaders Manchester City on Sunday as David Moyes continues the search for his first win since taking charge of the Hammers.

PREMIER LEAGUE'S STATEMENT

The match between Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United due to take place on December 31 2017 has been rescheduled to 8pm on Thursday 4 January 2018.

The League selected this match for December 31 with the expectation that a regular crowd capacity would be able to attend.

However, despite significant work by all parties to achieve this, ultimately the Safety Advisory Group at Wembley would only recommend a maximum crowd of 43,000.

This was due to transport issues, primarily at local Tube stations whose resources were being deployed elsewhere across London on New Year’s Eve.

Following discussions with the clubs involved, and Sky Sports, a decision was taken to seek an alternative date that would allow far more fans to attend the match.
