Chelsea could be without David Luiz for an extended period after Antonio Conte revealed he is waiting on a doctor's update on a new knee injury for his centre back.

Luiz has been ruled out of Wednesday's Premier League visit of Swansea City and there is no indication of when he will return.

Chelsea's medical team are assessing the Brazilian centre back, who suffered from knee problems last season after a clash with Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero in December.

Luiz has been usurped in Conte's first XI by Andreas Christensen of late but his absence could leave Chelsea short in the centre of the manager's favoured back three set-up.

'I can tell you the players not available,' Conte said on Tuesday. 'Luiz for a knee problem, (Charly) Musonda, (Michy) Batshuayi and Kenedy are trying to find the right form to be back.'

Asked about the severity of Luiz's injury, the Italian added: 'I must be honest at the moment it is difficult for me to answer. It will be up to the doctor to assess it and take the best decision.I don't know how long he will be out.'

Luiz had his right knee crunch by a horror challenge from Aguero last season but was not forced to miss any Premier League games, playing out most of the rest of the campaign with heavy strapping.

This season his position has been under heavier questioning with Christensen, 21, starting Chelsea's last three Premier League games.

Luiz started the midweek Champions League win away at Qarabag as Conte shuffled his pack, although he now appears to be a deputy to Christensen.
