Watford 2-0 West Ham: David Moyes gets trolled already as Andy Carroll gives Marvin Zeegelaar a taste of his elbow - FIVE THINGS YOU MISSED

  • West Ham got their David Moyes era off to a losing start against Watford
  • The anti-Moyes brigade soon came out in force and trolled the Scotsman
  • Will Hughes put in a promising display to show England's youth is still shining
  • Age no obstacle for Heurelho Gomes as 36-year-old pulls off incredible saves

West Ham endured a miserable afternoon at Vicarage Road and got their new era under David Moyes off to the most unconvincing of starts.

The veteran manager took to the helm for the first time after being brought in by the Hammers to steady the ship following the departure of Slaven Bilic, though didn't get off to the start he and many fans expected.

As the action raged on at Vicarage Road, Sportsmail kept a keen eye out for some of the finer details you may well have missed...

Hitting the big 500

Moyes has been managing football clubs for a long time. A very long time.

Walking out at Vicarage Road the Scotsman not only marked his first game in charge of a new side, but also joined the exclusive 500 club.

The 54-year-old is only the fourth gaffer to reach the milestone of 500 Premier League games in charge, joining the esteemed company of Sir Alex Ferguson, Arsene Wenger and Harry Redknapp.

England's youth still shining

It's been a promising few months for England's next generation.

The respective summer World Cup wins of Under 20s and Under 17s got the nation talking, with excitement soon reaching fever pitch when recently Gareth Southgate gave a host of youngsters senior team opportunities.

One man who will be keen to get in on the act is Will Hughes, and the 22-year-old helped his cause greatly here by bagging on just his second Hornets start.

With his first shot in the yellow shirt the midfielder pivoted on the spot and rifled an effort past goalkeeper Joe Hart. Promising stuff.

All elbows and knees

Andy Carroll isn't always noted as the most elegant of footballers, that much is clear.

Perhaps eager to impress under a new manager, the Geordie striker bundled into the match and quite literally bundled into Marvin Zeegelaar.

The Watford man got a taste of the No 9's elbow as the pair duelled in the air for the ball. A fired up Carroll escaped with a warning, but was booked for another incident soon after.

Heurelho the cat

A clean sheet and a storming performance - it was a tidy afternoon's work for Heurelho Gomes.

When you've got a 'keeper who can fling himself between the sticks with the reflexes of a young cat, you're always going to be in with a good chance of winning the game.

With half-time approaching and his team sitting on a 1-0 lead, Gomes pulled off two quite remarkable instinct saves to deny Marko Arnautovic.

At close range the 36-year-old threw himself to deny West Ham's record signing, before flinging himself through the air seconds later to quell a rebound. Exhausting, even to watch.

Moyes-out brigade get the jokes in early

It was oh so predictable but the classic Moyes-out mob started clearing their throats the moment the Hammers went behind.

Since his ill-fated stint at the helm of Manchester United, in a position which seemed quite frankly beyond him, Moyes became something of a comedy figure of doom for large sections of the internet.

Watford's victory sparked into life the criticisms once more, with Twitter users wasting no time in putting the boot in.

One user quipped: 'Eat, sleep, lose, repeat' accompanied by a pic of the Scotsman in his United pomp. History is not so easy to shake off. Who would've thought it?
