Jack Butland has been ruled out for up to six weeks after breaking a finger during a training session with England on Thursday.

The 24-year-old saw a specialist on Friday morning and Stoke's medical staff have decided he does not require surgery.

However his absence will still come as a devastating blow to Mark Hughes with his side struggling to find form this season.

Stoke are now likely to seek compensation from the FA for Butland's lay-off which could see him miss crucial matches against Brighton, Crystal Palace, Swansea, Burnley and West Ham.

He was out for more than a year after fracturing his ankle for England against Germany in March 2016.

Butland played in England's final World Cup qualifier and manager Gareth Southgate was set to continue with the 24-year-old for the visit of world champions Germany.

He is widely viewed as Joe Hart's successor as No 1 and has impressed this season despite Stoke being just three points above the Premier League relegation zone.

Lee Grant will deputise for the Potters — the 34-year-old stopper played 30 games in all competitions last season and impressed.
