England's shallow talent pool: Only 33 English players that started matches in the Premier League last weekend have not yet been called up to senior squad

Just 33 English players who started Premier League matches last weekend have not yet been called up to the England squad

Jack Cork's call-up on Tuesday means that of the players who started in the top flight's most recent round of fixtures before the international break, only 33 Englishman have yet to make the England squad.

The list, provided by Football365, highlights the shallow pool of talent England manager Gareth Southgate has to choose from in the Premier League.

It features a number of players who have been touted for call-ups in the past, from West Ham midfielder Mark Noble to Crystal Palace defender Scott Dann.

The likes of Leicester winger Demarai Gray might be hopeful of an inclusion soon given Southgate's policy of promoting players from the Under 21s.

The England manager handed surprise call-ups to Under 21s trio Joe Gomez, Tammy Abraham and Ruben Loftus-Cheek for the friendlies against Germany and Brazil.

Cork meanwhile was selected after six players withdrew from Southgate's initial 25-man squad through injury ahead of the World Cup warm-up matches.

Tottenham trio Harry Kane, Harry Winks, Dele Alli all withdrew along with Jordan Henderson, Raheem Sterling and Fabian Delph.

Everton's Michael Keane and West Brom's Jake Livermore, with four and five England caps respectively, were also drafted in to cover the injury crisis.

A UEFA study in January revealed the Premier League has the highest percentage of foreign players of any domestic European league at 69.2 per cent.

By way of comparison, the next highest proportion of foreign players in a major European league is Italy's Serie A with 55.5 per cent.

England's Young Lions experienced success this year with both the Under 20s and Under 17s winning their respective World Cup while the Under 21s were knocked out on penalties in the semi-finals of the European Championships.

The senior squad are in action on Friday against world champions Germany before hosting Brazil on Tuesday with both friendlies being played at Wembley.

Southgate's side sealed their place at the 2018 World Cup in Russia by topping their qualification group with eight wins and two draws from their 10 matches played.
