Chelsea midfielder Danny Drinkwater hails Antonio Conte's 'passion' after the Italian tore into his team this week

  • Chelsea host Manchester United at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon
  • The Blues go into the game following a dreadful 3-0 loss at Roma on Tuesday
  • Manager Antonio Conte fumed at his players in a subsequent midweek meeting
  • But midfielder Danny Drinkwater is pleased his boss is able to show his 'passion'

Danny Drinkwater has revealed Roman Abramovich's training ground visit has done little to dampen Antonio Conte's 'passion' as he looks to light a fire under his beleaguered players against Manchester United on Sunday.

Abramovich checked in to watch training in the lead up to Tuesday's 3-0 thrashing at Roma — but the close eyes on him have not turned Conte down a notch.

Instead, Chelsea's players faced the Italian's wrath in a major mid-week inquest before turning their attention to Sunday's game, and Drinkwater has not seen a manager hiding his emotions.

The former Leicester City midfielder could be in line for an increased role as Conte shuffles his pack after a tired, lifeless performance in Rome.

'We discussed the game, looked at the problems and now we're looking ahead to Sunday to hopefully get a result there,' Drinkwater told the Mail on Sunday this week.

'Conte was a big factor in me coming to Chelsea, his passion for football and to win games was something that I looked at and I wanted to be a part of. The reality is it's not changed.

'It's the same as what you see on the sideline: the passion, the emotion. He's that person. He's great to work with. He is what he is. What you see is what you get.

'He doesn't hide his emotions, he doesn't not show his passion. He wears his heart on his sleeve and I think that shows in his players.'

An iffy opening to their Premier League title defence and Tuesday night's Italian humbling have piled pressure on to Chelsea as they look to keep pace with United and Manchester City.

But Drinkwater says the players at Stamford Bridge are not feeling the heat any more than they usually would for the visit of a title rival.

'It's always a big game. It's United at Stamford Bridge,' he said. 'It's a massive game no matter how the results have been in the past.

'We're just going to try to focus on ourselves and hopefully the performance comes and we get the result we want.'
