Tottenham 3-1 Real Madrid, RESULT: Dele Alli scores twice before Christian Eriksen gets his first Champions League goal in five years

MARTIN SAMUEL: Start with the third goal, because it was just so good. A lovely reverse pass from Dele Alli to Harry Kane; a perfectly weighted pass inside from Kane to Christian Eriksen; the coolest of finishes from Eriksen clipped with his left foot, past goalkeeper Kiko Casilla, to ensure no nasty surprises.

And that was it. Real Madrid were done. For the first time in a Champions League group game since October 2012. They have only failed to score once in 53 European group matches, too. 

My word, Tottenham really did a job on them. By the end, Cristiano Ronaldo, who had never lost a match at Wembley was a study in cold, impotent fury. He wasn’t even in the best 11 players on the field, despite his opportunist goal from close range in the 80th minute. Every one of them played for Tottenham.

That's it. Game over. Tottenham record their first win over Real Madrid. Zidane will be asking many questions of his players. For Pochettino, he will be overjoyed with how his side played. His side's place in the last-16 of the Champions League is secure.

91min: Ramos booked for clapping referee Cekir. Not a wise move as the clock ticks down at Wembley. Ronaldo also shakes his head before laughing at his Real team-mate.

89min: Dembele catches Ramos having already gone through Kroos. The Spurs player gets a yellow card. He certainly left a boot in there no doubt because of Ramos' behaviour minutes earlier. Llorente then has a chance but Casilla gets out to gather before the striker could make the most of Eriksen's pass.

88min: Tottenham free-kick as Ramos fouls Alli. In the Real Madrid half. Trippier takes but it's overhit and evades everyone in the Real Madrid area.

87min: Hernandez plays the ball into the Tottenham six-yard box but Vertonghen does well to clear as Ronaldo lurked at the far post. Ramos then catches Dembele with an elbow but the situation is calmed down very quickly by referee Cekir.

84min: Ronaldo tries an effort from outside the Tottenham area but it's straight at Lloris and he saves easily.

83min: Marcelo's cross into the Real Madrid box is cleared by Davies before Casemiro launches the ball over the Spurs crossbar.

Can't even class it as a lifeline but Ronaldo's effort deflects off Dier and fizzes past Lloris from close range. Nothing the Tottenham goalkeeper could have done about that. Meanwhile, Modric comes off for Hernandez.

78min: Real Madrid trying, rather embarrassingly, to play through the middle but there is nobody working to produce space. Tottenham are allowing the Real Madrid players to come forward and don't look particularly too worried with what Los Blancos are going to do next. Alli, meanwhile, nearly makes it 4-0 with a header. 

Pochettino then decides to make his final change. Kane comes off for Llorente.

He writes: 'We’ve just had more than a minute of ‘oles’ from all around Wembley as Tottenham pass the ball around, three goals to the good against Real Madrid. What a night for the football club and its supporters.'

73min: Zidane chooses to make two changes. Asensio and Mayoral on for Isco and Benzema. 

72min: Real Madrid may as well have given up. Tottenham are passing the ball about freely. The Spurs fans are really enjoying this now. Eriksen races down the right before playing the ball into the Real Madrid box where Casemiro clears.

70min: Real Madrid come forward again. They want to score at least once. Kroos lifts the ball into the Tottenham area for Ronaldo to run onto but the ball bounces away from him. His frustrated figure is shown on the big screens around the stadium and the Spurs fans take great delight in jeering him.

68min: Real Madrid corner. Played in by Toni Kroos. Out to Isco but his shot back towards the Tottenham goal is saved easily by Lloris. Spurs break forward immediately before Ramos stops Eriksen.

65min: Harry Winks is replaced by Mousa Dembele. Spurs have 25 minutes to really enjoy themselves now.

Oh dear, oh dear. Alli plays the ball up to Kane before he passes to Eriksen who strides forward into the Real Madrid area and finishes calmly past Casilla. His first Champions League goal in five years. 

63min: A ridiculous goalline scramble ensues in the Tottenham penalty area before Ronaldo ends up blocking a shot from his own team-mates. There was nothing Ronaldo could do about it. Moments later Vertonghen intercepts a pass bound for the star forward. It really has not gone his way this evening.

58min: Brilliant atmosphere inside Wembley as Tottenham's fans chant: 'We are Tottenham.' This has all come because of Real Madrid's poor defending but Spurs have been good value for their lead. They've never given up on a second goal and now they have it.

Alli worked his way into the Real Madrid area after taking the ball past Casemiro. Ramos then didn't get close enough. That allowed Alli to take a touch before shooting towards goal. His effort takes a deflection past goalkeeper Casilla. Again, Ronaldo looks crestfallen.

53min: Marcelo fizzes the ball across the Tottenham six-yard box and Eric Dier - so calm under pressure - traps the ball and clears. Ronaldo again looks annoyed. He was at the back post and wanted the pass played quicker than it was.

51min: Benzema has looked a lot sharper since the beginning of this second half. Real Madrid now have a free-kick after Sissoko takes down Marcelo. The ball is outside the Tottenham box to the left. Kroos to take but Lloris does very well to punch the ball clear. He tumbles in a bit of heap as he comes down to the ground over the top of Ramos.

48min: Benzema manages to bundle his way past Winks but Trippier eventually gets the ball off the striker. Hakimi then tries to play the ball back into the Tottenham area but Winks clears.

46min: Tottenham start brightly. Sissoko down the right before playing the ball to Kane who squares the ball but Modric does well to get back and clear.

Kane takes kick-off and here we go. No changes made by either side.

Dele Alli goes down under the challenge of Casemiro in the Real Madrid penalty. Referee Cekir says no foul. Pochettino protests but nothing comes of it. Vertonghen then wins a free-kick down the other end as he is brought down. Seconds later and Cekir blows his whistle for half-time. Ronaldo in particular looks deeply unhappy with his side's performance.

44min: Danny Rose getting ready on the touchline. Ben Davies has gone down and could be coming off minutes before the half-time whistle. Davies, however, receives some treatment from the side of the pitch and comes back on.

41min: Sissoko and Kane both close to extending the lead for Tottenham. Sissoko first of all couldn't get the ball out from his feet before Kane's shot from close range is blocked by Ramos. The striker shot straight at Casilla. Zidane must be worried, though. His side have been awful in defence.

39min: Little pull on Casemiro's shirt by Winks and the midfielder goes down theatrically to say the least. Toni Kroos stands over the free-kick but goes out for a corner. Marcelo to Isco to Modric. But the former Tottenham midfielder overhits his pass and Lloris will gather the ball for a goal kick.

35min: Alli and Kane combine outside the Real Madrid penalty area but the striker doesn't quite catch his left-footed shot cleanly and Casilla saves.

31min: The confidence in Tottenham's play is growing. There is a swagger about them now. The sort of swagger than Real Madrid had arrived with hours earlier. Ronaldo finally gets a shot away, though, but Lloris is equal to it and puts it round for a corner. It comes in but is cleared.

He writes: 'Tottenham score first but Kieran Trippier, who crossed the ball was offside. Interestingly no Madrid player appealed.' 

28min: 'We've got Alli,' rings out round Wembley. It really shouldn't have been that easy for him to score there. Trippier was left unmarked by Marcelo and a brilliant ball across the box has punished them. 

Meanwhile, Real Madrid have a corner but Davies and Trippier clear the ball between them.

Alli overhits his pass but Kane does well to chase down Nacho and win a throw-in. The ball then goes over to the right before it is played into the six-yard box by Trippier (who was offside) and Alli pokes past Casilla. 

24min: First change of the night. Sissoko comes on to replace the injured Alderweireld. Eric Dier moves into the middle of the back three and Sissoko partners Winks in midfield.

23min: Alderweireld goes down behind the Real Madrid goal after trying to sprint past Casemiro. It looks as though the defender may have pulled his hamstring. He is still down. The ball goes forward to Ronaldo but a brilliant tackle by Vertonghen stops the forward getting a shot away.

21min: Winks mishits his first effort but still has time to try and engineer another chance just to the right of the Real Madrid six-yard box. Casilla handles well but Ramos and Nacho weren't quick enough there and they nearly let their team-mates down.

19min: Tottenham corner. Trippier takes but his delivery is headed clear by Ronaldo before the ball is played in again from the left and this time Ramos is in position to clear. Tottenham in control of this one so far.

18min: I mentioned Winks earlier but the progress Alli has made has been nothing short of brilliant. Five years ago he was playing for MK Dons against Cambridge City in the FA Cup first round in front of just over 500 people. Some contrast to tonight.

16min: Sanchez does well to head out Isco's cross but Real Madrid have the ball again. Hakimi tries a cross from the right but it is easily blocked. Tottenham regain possession and look to move forward. Eriksen plays the pass up to Kane but the striker isn't quick enough to get to the ball before Nacho.

14min: Eriksen wide to Davies. The full back looks inside to Winks before he plays the ball to Dier. Spurs are keeping the ball well in the Real Madrid half but it's Alli who loses the ball before it is eventually played into the opposition six-yard box by Trippier but none of his team-mates are in a position to attack the ball.

10min: Kane to Eriksen but Ramos blocks the midfielder's shot from 30 yards. Kane then plays the ball forward again and Ramos misses the ball but Eriksen can't turn quickly enough to cause goalkeeper Casilla any problems.

8min: Kane certainly isn't moving as comfortably as usual. Proof of that seemed to be when Eriksen played a high ball into the Real Madrid area and Kane hesitated before going to attack the ball.

7min: Eriksen directing the play well for Spurs before the ball is given away by Winks. Real Madrid then go on the attack but Hakimi's ball is poor and Dier clears. Ronaldo clearly annoyed with the youngster there.

6min: First corner of the evening. Isco delivers it from the left and Ramos heads over. Sanchez did well there to pressure the Real Madrid captain.

5min: Steady tempo from both sides to start with. Marcelo is already looking like being Real Madrid's main outlet this evening. Trippier does well, though, to block his cross coming into the Spurs box and clears the danger.

3min: Ronaldo gets the ball over on the right side and receives a few boos from the Spurs fans. Isco then tries a shot from outside the Spurs area but it doesn't trouble Lloris.

2min: Isco's ball forward can't find Ronaldo who was dropping off Vertonghen and the ball goes harmlessly through to Lloris.

1min: The noise inside Wembley coming from the Tottenham supporters, who bellow out 'oh when the Spurs go marching in'.

Referee Cuneyt Cakir blows the whistle for kick-off and Real Madrid gets us started.

Cristiano Ronaldo hasn't been in the best of moods recently. In the 2-1 defeat by Girona on Sunday left him frustrated.

Tonight, against Tottenham, he has a chance to drag his side through to the knockout stages of the Champions League.

He has five goals in three Champions League appearances this season.

Vertonghen adds: 'Overall it was a very good experience and we were so close of winning there. we have to be on top of our game every game we play'

On Cristiano Ronaldo, who starts tonight: 'So much respect for him. he's so sharp and has so much quality.'

We're getting more and more used to seeing the name of Harry Winks in Tottenham's midfield. Back-to-back starts for him against Real Madrid.

The 21-year-old has appeared very assured on the ball and tonight will be yet another big challenge for him in the centre of midfield alongside Eric Dier.

Last month Tottenham were superb against Real Madrid, drawing the game at Santiago Bernabeu 1-1. 

Before the the story was quite different. Over the last three games, Real Madrid have managed 21 shots compared to Tottenham's 13.

Real have also had the majority of the possession overall. Fifty-eight per cent being the key figure there.

But probably one of the most telling stats is Real's pass success rate. Eighty-nine per cent compared with Tottenham's 79. 

It is that sort of stat that could make all the different tonight on a large pitch such as Wembley.

Karim Benzema hasn't been the best of form this season, scoring just two goals for Real Madrid this season.

His poor conversion rate this term has led to former Tottenham striker Gary Lineker branding Benzema 'over-rated'.

Benzema has since said he feels 'embarrassed' for Lineker after making the comments.

Both side's are struggling with injuries. Harry Kane is expected to play but isn't fully fit, while Gareth Bale has been completely ruled out. The in no way should take away from what should be a fantastic spectacle at Wembley.

Both teams suffered defeats at the weekend. Tottenham losing to Manchester United and Real Madrid going down 2-1 away at Girona.
