Stoke midfielder Charlie Adam admits he could leave club in search of more playing time after frustrating season: 'I want to stay but I want to be playing'

  • Scot has started eight of club's 10 Premier League matches on the bench
  • He has warned he may not renew contract in search of more minutes

Stoke midfielder Charlie Adam would be happy to extend his five-year stay at the Premier League club as long as he gets regular first-team playing time.

The 31-year-old's contract is due to expire next summer and he has endured a frustrating start to this campaign.

The Scot has been forced to watch on from the bench for eight Premier League games but did make a two-minute cameo in last Saturday's 1-0 win against Watford.

Adam has been largely consigned to League Cup duty, playing in both the club's second and third round ties earlier this season.

Mark Hughes' side defeated Rochdale 4-0 in round one before crashing out 0-2 to Bristol City.

Adam has declared his intention to remain at the Bet365 Stadium but admits more game time is a priority.

'I love it here and I want to stay but I want to be playing as well so we will have to wait and see,' Adam told Sky Sports.

'The manager has said that I would have to wait for an injury or a suspension before I get an opportunity.

'I try and work hard, I don't cause any problems, I enjoy it there and the manager knows that when called on he could rely on me.

'But it all comes down to the club and what they want to do.'

Adam joined The Potters from Liverpool for £5.5million in August 2012, following a sensational Premier League season for Blackpool in 2010-11.

He made 24 appearances in the Premier League last campaign but the arrival of Darren Fletcher from West Brom in the summer has nudged him down the pecking order.

Fletcher, also Adam's national team-mate, has been ever-present in the top flight this campaign.

Currently 14th in the league, Stoke will try to climb up the table when they host 11th-placed Leicester City on Saturday.
