Liverpool and Manchester City target Faouzi Ghoulam set to put pen to paper on new Napoli deal

  • Faouzi Ghoulam has one year left on his current deal at Napoli
  • Liverpool and Manchester City have been keeping a close eye on the player
  • The left back is set to sign a new deal keeping him up at the club until 2022

Napoli left-back Faouzi Ghoulam is set to sign a new deal despite interest from Premier League duo Liverpool and Manchester City.

The 26-year-old had been lined up as a temporary replacement for City's Benjamin Mendy, who is in the midst of a long spell on the sidelines after picking up a serious knee injury against Crystal Palace.

Ghoulam has just one year remaining on his current deal and City and Liverpool were handed a boost, after an agent recently said the player was unlikely to extend.

However, that no longer looks to be the case with Sportmediaset reporting the player is now close to renewing his contract.

Negotiations are said to be ongoing but both parties are confident of coming to an agreement over a new deal that will see the Algerian remain in Italy until 2022 with a buyout clause of £30.81m.

Last season Ghoulam emerged as one of the most monitored defenders in European football, contributing 10 assists in 38 appearances in all competitions.

The full back has continued to impress this term, starting all 16 games for Napoli, who sit top of Serie A.
