NFL chief hails Tottenham Hotspur's new stadium (which will also host American Football matches): 'It is clearly going to be a world-class venue'

Tottenham Hotspur's new stadium was given a visit by Roger Goodell, the commissioner of the NFL, on Monday.

He was joined by the club's chairman, Daniel Levy, who took the American Football chief on a guided tour of the new 61,500-seater ground, which is set to open next season.

Goodell also brought along NFL executive vice president Mark Waller as he took in the progress at the stadium in north London.

Spurs and the NFL have an agreement to host matches at the new stadium over the next 10 years, starting in 2018

The new Tottenham stadium is under construction and scheduled to be opened for the start of the 2018-19 season

Work has been ramped up since Spurs moved out of their traditional White Hart Lane home at the end of last season

Tottenham and the NFL have a 10-year agreement to stage International Series matches at the stadium starting in 2018, and Goodell was impressed by what he saw.

He said: 'The new Tottenham Hotspur stadium is clearly going to be a world-class venue. 

'We are very pleased with how closely we have been able to work with the club, and are optimistic that the broader regeneration plan will make for an extraordinary experience for NFL fans.'

Spurs have included facilities specifically designed for players of American Football, and have added dedicated entrances and media facilities to the new ground.

Levy was clearly in a good mood as he had the chance to show one of his new partners the project at the ground

The grass pitch that will be used for football can be retracted, revealing an artificial surface to be used for NFL matches.

Levy was delighted to have given Goodell a tour of the ground during its construction. He said: 'It is always a pleasure to welcome the NFL to Tottenham and for them to see the vision that we share becoming a reality right in front of us. 

'We have worked closely with them throughout this project and their involvement will play a significant part in helping us create one of the most compelling venues for sports and entertainment in the world, right here in Tottenham.'

The new ground will be the largest club football stadium in London, surpassing the current record held by Arsenal's 60,000-seater Emirates Stadium.
