There were fears for Costa Rican winger Kenny Cunningham's life on Thursday night after a collision with an opposition player left him unconscious in Olimpia's 1-0 win over Santos de Guapiles.

The 32-year-old winger jumped up for a high ball in the early stages of the CONCACAF League Final but clashed heads with Honduran Kevin Alvarez.

The incident left the Santos de Guapiles man motionless on the pitch as players on both sides crowded around to offer help and support.

Medical staff were quick onto the scene but there was a delay in getting an ambulance onto the pitch.


Eventually a gate was opened in the north sector of the National Stadium in San Jose to allow the paramedics onto the field of play.

Players on both sides were visibly shaken by the incident, with some kneeling down and offering prayers to the heavens.

Cunningham was lifted into the ambulance via a stretcher and then taken to San Jose Hospital.

The Costa Rican international's condition was later reported as stable and conscious though he was being sent for a CT scan for further checks. 

Michaell Chirinos scored the winning goal for Olimpia, to bring the two sides level in the two-legged final.

The visitors then claimed the trophy with a 4-1 penalty shootout victory.
