Tottenham will now go over 10 years without a trophy... their longest drought since the Second World War

  • Tottenham were dumped out the League Cup following 3-2 defeat by West Ham
  • Last major trophy was the 2008 League Cup won under Juande Ramos
  • Previous longest barren run was a decade between 1951 and 1961 league titles
  • But Spurs will now go beyond that drought by at least three months

For Tottenham Hotspur fans looking on the bright side, the current squad is the best the club has produced since at least the inception of the Premier League in 1992.

But defeat by West Ham United in the League Cup means that Spurs will now go over 10 years without a trophy - their longest drought since the Second World War.

Tottenham's last trophy came in February 2008 when Jonathan Woodgate's header helped Juande Ramos's side stun Chelsea to win the League Cup.

But in the same competition on Wednesday, Mauricio Pochettino's outfit embarrassingly threw away a 2-0 lead against the Hammers to go down 3-2 at Wembley in the last-16 - ensuring the club will now have to wait until at least May 2018 to lift a pot.

With this season's League Cup final in February 2018, Spurs were already on course to equal their longest barren run.

The club's previous longest major trophy drought spanned exactly a decade and came between their only two top flight titles won in 1951 and 1961.

Fans remain hopeful of the latest drought ending this term. They are still in the hunt for the Premier League title, Champions League and the FA Cup.

However outside of the League Cup Spurs haven't won any of the trio since the FA Cup in 1991 - the last time they also reached the competition's final.

They have lost three League Cup finals, seven consecutive FA Cup semi-finals and failed to reach the last four in any European competition they have entered.

For a club of Tottenham's stature it's a severe underachievement, however they are not alone among a list of English clubs with trophy rooms that haven't had major additions in recent times.

Arguably the most famous run is held by Newcastle United who haven't won a major competition since the now defunct Inter-Cities Fairs-Cup in 1969.

One of England's most trophy laden clubs Liverpool have only won the League Cup inside the last decade while the likes of Everton and Aston Villa haven't won anything in the 21st century.
