Tottenham 2-3 West Ham - FIVE THINGS WE LEARNED: Hammers still want to fight for Slaven Bilic while Dele Alli starts to show signs of life again

  • Tottenham went 2-0 up at Wembley through Moussa Sissoko and Dele Alli
  • However, Andre Ayew pegged the hosts back with two quickfire goals
  • And remarkably, Angelo Ogbonna headed home the winner on 70 minutes

West Ham progressed to the last eight of the Carabao Cup after coming from 2-0 down to beat London rivals Tottenham 3-2.

Tottenham were in cruise control at Wembley on Wednesday night after first half goals from Moussa Sissoko and Dele Alli.

However, the Hammers remarkably turned the game around in the second period, thanks to a brace from Andre Ayew and Angelo Ogbonna's winner on 70 minutes.

Here Sportsmail's KIERAN GILL reflects on what he learned as under-fire West Ham boss Slaven Bilic managed to relieve some of the pressure on his shoulders...

WEST HAM STARS STILL FIGHTING FOR THEIR BOSS

Heading into this, there was a question of whether West Ham’s players were actually trying for Slaven Bilic. Among the damning statistics were that they have covered the least distance in the Premier League and produced the fewest sprints. After a lifeless first half left them 2-0 down, their second-half comeback said it all – they still want to fight for their beleaguered boss.

DELE ALLI STARTING TO RE-FIND HIS FORM

By Dele Alli’s standards, this has been a disappointing season. He was linked with Real Madrid in the summer but those who have him on Fantasy Football had not got much bang for their buck. A goal against Liverpool and a lively performance here in a deeper role showed there are signs of life. After seeing his header saved by Adrian, the 21-year-old kept going and got his goal.

TOTTENHAM LOSE THEIR FOCUS

Tottenham's players thought it would all go according to plan from the sixth minute. Like Liverpool on Sunday, West Ham tried to defend on the halfway line and it led to them conceding the opener inside six minutes. A simple flick by Fernando Llorente left Son Heung-min with an abundance of grass to attack, before Moussa Sissoko slotted the ball beyond Adrian. Simple. Yet it was the home side's defending that left a lot to be desired in the second half. Mauricio Pochettino was pulling his hair out.

ANDRE AYEW BRINGS HAMMERS TO LIFE

After his senseless sending off at Burnley left West Ham short in the striker department against Brighton, Andy Carroll had some making up to do. He was starved of service, often relying on lumped balls up top, but still put up a fight. Bilic opted for two up front, however, and Carroll’s partner Andre Ayew showed true goal-poaching ability. It was he who started this comeback.

DANNY ROSE MUST EARN HIS PLACE IN SPURS XI

This was Danny Rose’s first start since January. The England left back looked sharp at times but he has to earn his starting spot all over again. Pochettino’s new book mentions how disappointed he was when Kyle Walker told him he wanted to leave a month-and-a-half before the 2016-17 season was over. Imagine his fury when Rose criticised the club and said he was open to leaving in that interview in August.
