Liverpool's defence 'will always kill' any chance they have of success, according to former Manchester United captain Gary Neville.

The Reds were well beaten 4-1 by Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley, with all four goals coming after defensive mistakes.

Centre back Dejan Lovren made two errors as Spurs went 2-0 up inside 12 minutes, before partner Joel Matip's weak defensive header allowed Dele Alli to score a third before half time.

Goalkeeper Simon Mignolet was at fault for the fourth after missing his punch before Harry Kane bundled home, and Neville was scathing of Liverpool's defensive abilities.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Neville said: ‘This team can be scintillating, but the centre backs and goalkeeper will always kill them, they are not good enough, they will always let you down’

Sportsmail columnist Jamie Redknapp was equally unimpressed, saying Liverpool's front line constantly have to try and win games in spite of the players behind them.

Redknapp said: ‘Going forward Liverpool are as good as any (team), but if I played in this team it would drive me mad with the individual mistakes this back four makes.

'These are individual mistakes, time and time again, and that's why the manager wanted to buy a centre back in the summer.

'They are just not good enough, individually or collectively, they are going to keep making these mistakes week-in, week-out. It must drive the likes of (Philippe) Coutinho crazy because know they have to score three or four goals to win a game.’
