Kylian Mbappe breaks another record as Scottish MP officiates Barcelona match and injured Gary Cahill takes no chances... eight things you missed from the Champions League

  • It was another busy week in the Champions League, with plenty of activity
  • Kylian Mbappe broke yet another record with his goal scoring exploits
  • Scottish MP Douglas Ross skipped commons duties to officiate for Barcelona
  • Bayern Munich interim coach Jupp Heynckes proved age is merely a number
  • Gary Cahill took a knock against Roma and went all out with the bandages

At the half-way point of this year's Champions League group stages, English sides appear to be a force to be reckoned with.

Wednesday's highlights saw Eden Hazard score his first goals of the season as Chelsea drew 3-3 at home to Roma, with Jose Mourinho's Manchester United labouring to a narrow away win over Benfica.

With so many games, you'd be forgiven for missing some of the finer details. Here, Sportsmail has gathered together all the things you missed from Wednesday's Champions League action.

Former managers check-in at the Bridge

Two former Chelsea managers were spotted in attendance at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea conceding three at home en-route to drawing with Roma.

Both Italians, the first was Gianluca Vialli, whilst the second to be sacked by Chelsea in attendance tonight was Carlo Ancelotti.

Having recently been let go by Bayern Munich, Ancelotti tweeted his joy at being back in West London, whose time at the club saw him win the double - a feat that's still remembered favourably by Chelsea fans.

MP trades the House of Commons for the Camp Nou

Conservative MP Douglas Ross missed a Commons vote on universal credit to undertake his officiating duties for Barcelona's tie with Olympiacos.

The politician splits his time between politics and sports, with SNP MP John McNally questioning what message this sends to the general public:

'What signal does she think this sends to hard working members of the public who are expected to turn up for their day jobs or face sanctions?'

Kylian Mbappe breaks a record

No player in the entirety of football besides Neymar has so far commanded a transfer fee in excess of £100 million. 18-year-old Kylian Mbappe will join that club next summer when PSG make his loan move permanent to the tune of £166m, and the French youngster continues to prove why he could be worth every penny.

Mbappe's tight-angled finish against Anderlecht makes him the highest scoring teenager in Champions League history with eight goals.

The former Monaco youngster surpasses Patrick Kluivert (7), Raul (6) and Karim Benzema (6), three Champions League-winning strikers widely considered to be among the best of their generation. No pressure then.

Arjen Robben enters the 100 club

The Dutch winger was unable to reach a ton for his country having recently retired, but enters the illustrious club of players to have made 100 appearances in Europe's elite competition.

Robben made his 100th Champions League appearance in the victory against Celtic, his 60th for Bayern, adding to 19 games with Chelsea, 11 with Real Madrid and 10 with PSV.

The tricky winger has scored 29 goals in that time and has been to three Champions League finals, with his lone victory coming in the 2-1 victory over Dortmund at Wembley in which Robben scored a late winner.

Jupp Heynckes proves age is nothing but a number…

Since returning to Bayern for his fourth spell, Jupp Heynckes led the Bavarian outfit to a thumping 5-0 win against Freiburg at the weekend, following that up with a convincing 3-0 win at home to Celtic.

The victory over Brendan Rodgers' side means Heynckes is now the competition's oldest-ever manager, becoming the only gaffer aged 72 or above to feature.

The 2013 treble-winning head coach surpassed Raymond Goethals' time Marseille in the early 1990s, with a certain Sir Alex Ferguson not far behind.

… but Miles Svilar shows his age

Benfica started 18-year-old Miles Svilar against Man United at the Stadium of Light, making him the youngest ever keeper to appear in the Champions League, beating the record set by Iker Casillas in 1999.

A shaky performance throughout was capped off with a huge error to gift United their only goal.

Marcus Rashford's free-kick caught him out of position and saw the young shot-stopper embarrassingly chipped from a set-piece that didn't at all appear dangerous.

Igor Akinfeev still can't catch a break

Now 46 games and 11 years have passed since CKSA Moscow goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev last kept a clean sheet in Europe.

His last shut-out came in a 1-0 victory against Arsenal back in 2006, with his defence unable to go 90 minutes in that time without conceding at least once.

On Wednesday, the Russian keeper conceded twice more as Basle eased to victory.

Cahill takes no chances

Gary Cahill needed treatment after a second half collision with a Roma player and, despite the incident not being serious, the bandage he received would suggest otherwise.

Donning a white bandage that covered not just his head but almost his entire face, the Chelsea defender struck something of a comedic figure.

Despite any possible ridicule, his excessive bandage helped to mask the fact that the Blues are now three games without a win, conceding six times in that period.
