Liverpool and Manchester United fans to be supervised on special trains by police ahead of Premier League clash

Police will supervise specially organised trains to ensure there is no trouble among fans heading to the game between Liverpool and Manchester United at Anfield on Saturday lunchtime.

Liverpool Lime Street station is currently closed to the public for refurbishments, but two tracks have been opened for the day to allow fans to travel between Manchester Victoria and Lime Street for one of the most eagerly-awaited fixtures in the football calendar.

British Transport Police will mount a major operation with officers deployed at both stations and on the trains to deter any troublemakers. They are advising members of the public to text them if they witness any signs of disorder.

A spokesman said: 'We have a full policing plan in place for the football on Saturday which will see thousands of fans descend on Liverpool for the game.


'We advise passengers to leave early as the trains will be busy and we will have officers throughout the journey at stations and on trains to help travelling fans get to and from the match.

'We will be highly visible at stations in Manchester and Liverpool, and if any passengers have any concerns or wish to report a crime they are advised to text us discreetly on 61016.'

Match commander, Chief Superintendent Dave Charnock, confirmed that special plans have been put in place to open Lime Street for the day.

He said: 'We have been working closely with Liverpool Football Club and Merseytravel to ensure that both home and away fans will be able to get to Anfield without any issues on Saturday. We are not anticipating any transport issues.

'Liverpool Lime Street station is currently closed but it has been agreed that two tracks will be opened to offer a half hourly service return service running between Manchester Victoria and Liverpool, which will run throughout the duration of the game.

'An announcement will be made during the game to left fans know that buses will be available to take them back to Lime Street station after the match. The Stagecoach bus strike planned for Saturday has also been called off.'
